A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989)
In probably the weakest of the entries, Freddy uses Alice’s
unborn child’s dreams to return and continue his killing spree, aiming to be
reborn through the baby.
Freddy is darker and more grotesque, focusing on twisted,
familial themes as he manipulates Alice’s baby. His humour becomes more
macabre, aligning with the horror of his methods.
Freddy pulls Alice and others into Gothic and disturbing
dreamscapes, including an asylum and a comic book world. His kills reflect
fears of adolescence and parenthood, including a horrifying “feeding” death
scene. We learn more about Freddy’s origins here, including a dream-like
version of the night he was conceived; born to a nun who was accidentally locked
into an insane asylum for a weekend with 100 inmates who repeatedly raped her. Hence
Freddy’s nickname, “The Bastard Son of a Hundred Maniacs”
Alice uses the help of her son Jacob, who turns Freddy’s power back on him, effectively defeating Freddy by overwhelming him with his own energy.
"One, two, Freddy’s coming for you…
Three, four, no children anymore.
Five, six, bloodlines he picks…
Seven, eight, Maggie holds his fate."
