Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
After years of rumours and development, the horror icon
smackdown fans had been waiting a decade for was here. Freddy resurrects Jason
Voorhees to strike fear into the residents of Springwood, hoping to regain his
power.
Lori Campbell (Monica Keener) and her friends find
themselves in the crossfire as they realize both killers are targeting them. The
characters are a mix of the new kids who just happen to live on Elm Street, and young
inmates at a mental health institute, who have been experiencing nightmares, but
are also the test subjects of an as yet unapproved drug that suppresses dreams.
Freddy is more manipulative, cunning, and strategic, using
Jason as a pawn. He combines his psychological horror style with mocking humour.
The fight scenes between the two characters are very entertaining, as Freddy relies
on his usual bag of tricks and manipulation but doesn’t reckon with the
unstoppable menace that is Jason Voorhees; never feeling pain, and bred for one
purpose – to kill.
Freddy’s realms play on his victims’ fears and traumas,
featuring grim settings like burning houses and dark, surreal landscapes.
Thinking he can control Jason to do his bidding, the hockey masked maniac does
his own thing, slaughtering whoever happens to be in his way.
Lori and her friends figure out a way to manipulate Jason into fighting Freddy. After a brutal fight, both killers appear defeated, though Jason emerges from the lake holding Freddy’s head (which winks), hinting at their immortality.
"One, two, Freddy’s reborn anew…
Three, four, his thirst restored.
Five, six, darker tricks…
Seven, eight, vengeance won’t wait."
