A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
In the original nightmare that started it all, a group of
teenagers in Springwood, Ohio, is plagued by terrifying nightmares of a scarred
man with a glove of knives, named Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). Each dream
leads to mortal danger, blurring the lines between the dream world and reality.
Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), a high school student,
realizes that Freddy is a real threat after her friends begin dying in their
sleep. As she learns about Freddy's origin—a vengeful spirit of a murdered
child-killer—she understands that he is hunting them down in their dreams.
In his first appearance, Freddy is mysterious, menacing, and
less prone to humour. His terrifying presence is punctuated by his burnt face,
dirty sweater, and signature clawed glove.
Freddy drags his victims into nightmarish worlds filled with
industrial and hellish visuals, like boiler rooms and dark alleyways. The kills
are brutal and disturbing, especially the iconic death of Glen (Johnny Depp),
where he's sucked into his bed and spewed out in a geyser of blood.
Nancy learns to control her fear, using it to pull Freddy
into the real world. In their final confrontation, she turns her back on him,
robbing him of power, and Freddy seemingly disappears, though his spirit
lingers ominously.
"One, two, Freddy’s not through…
Three, four, Jesse’s at the door.
Five, six, now Freddy’s tricks…
Seven, eight, possess his fate."
