A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
(1987)

In what many Nightmare fans tout as the best of the sequels, the third film takes us into a psychiatric hospital, where a group of teenagers suffering from nightmares are confronted by Freddy, who has returned to kill the last of Elm Street’s children.

Kristen Parker (a young Patricia Arquette), who can pull others into her dreams, teams up with Nancy (now a therapist) and the other “dream warriors,” each with unique dream powers, to fight Freddy. The warriors are an eclectic and colourful group of individuals, each with their own prevailing mental health issues, but learn how to turn these into powers, when faced with Freddy in their dreams. Kincaid is the standout!

The series took a slightly lighter turn at this stage, as Freddy becomes more sarcastic but also blends humour with horror as he taunts his victims. He embraces the “dream demon” aspect, using elaborate and creative methods to kill. The series was on fire here, really at it’s peak in terms of it’s large following and the extra-creative and exciting ways Freddy appears and plays with his characters fears. He crafts elaborate dream worlds, from a puppet master sequence to a surreal TV death. Each nightmare plays on the victim’s fears and weaknesses in grotesque, imaginative ways.

With the help of dream powers and a religious artifact wielded by Dr. Neil Gordon, Freddy is temporarily defeated when his bones are buried and sanctified.

"One, two, Freddy's back anew…
Three, four, Alice has the lore.
Five, six, dream powers mix…
Seven, eight, Alice seals his fate."
