Friday the 13th (1980)

The original film takes place at Camp Crystal Lake, a remote summer camp in New Jersey that is trying to reopen despite its troubled past. The camp is surrounded by a dense forest and a serene lake that quickly turns ominous once night falls. The dark woods, dilapidated cabins, and the eerie quiet of the lake create an atmosphere of isolation and impending doom.

The story revolves around a group of young camp counselors, including Alice, Marcie, and Jack, who are preparing the camp for the summer season. Each character is portrayed with a sense of naivety and fun, unaware of the dark history of the camp. As they go about their duties and indulge in summer camp flirtations, they become easy prey for the unseen killer lurking in the woods.

In this film, Jason is not the killer; instead, his mother, Pamela Voorhees, is revealed to be behind the murders, driven by grief over her son's drowning years earlier. She is an ordinary woman with a vengeful mission, and there is no iconic mask or hulking figure yet. The most creative kill is perhaps the arrow through the throat of a young Kevin Bacon’s character, a gruesome surprise attack. Pamela Voorhees meets her end when Alice, the final girl, decapitates her with a machete in a struggle by the lakeside.

"But if you think Camp Crystal Lake’s seen the worst of its fate, just wait five years for ‘Part Two’ — Jason’s back at the gate!"
