Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

The eighth film shifts the setting dramatically from the familiar woods of Crystal Lake to the urban sprawl of New York City, though much of the film still takes place on a cruise ship bound for Manhattan. The cramped and narrow hallways of the ship create a sense of claustrophobia, while the gritty, graffiti-covered streets and alleyways of late '80s Manhattan add a new urban menace to Jason's reign of terror.

A graduating class of high school seniors, along with their chaperones, board the SS Lazarus for a celebratory cruise to New York. Among them are Rennie, a young woman with a traumatic connection to Crystal Lake, her boyfriend Sean, and a variety of classmates with the usual mix of personalities — from the popular girl to the aspiring rock star. The confined space of the ship and the unfamiliarity of the city make them easy prey for Jason, who has stowed away aboard.

Jason is revived once more, looking waterlogged and decayed after years underwater. His hockey mask is slimy and stained, and his clothing is tattered and drenched, emphasizing his relentless pursuit of his victims. The most memorable kill involves Jason punching off a boxer’s head with a single blow on a rooftop in New York. Jason's demise comes when he is doused with toxic waste in the sewers of Manhattan, his mask melting away as he seemingly reverts to a childlike form, an ambiguous and surreal end to his urban massacre.

"He slashed through the Big Apple, but fate has more to tell, for next, he’s taking a detour straight to ‘Hell’!"
